Our Emmaus Alzheimer's Care Center is a 26-bed secured unit that provides a smaller, quieter, more structured, home-like environment that lessens anxiety and promotes comfort for people with Alzheimer's and related dementias. Emmaus has an easily accessible courtyard and walking area that provides freedom of movement in a secure outdoor environment. Activities are specially designed to meet the needs and interests of those with memory loss. Why the name Emmaus? The word Emmaus comes from the story in the Gospel of Luke. Emmaus is a place that may have been near Jerusalem. Following Jesus' resurrection, some of the disciples were walking along the road to Emmaus when they encountered a stranger. They visited with the stranger for awhile, and then continued their journey to Jerusalem. It was only later that they realized that the stranger was really Jesus. This story from the Gospel reminds us to look carefully, for Jesus is there to be found in everyone we meet. |
